Main activities

  • Background pollution monitoring, data validation, quality assurance, analysis and data transmission (data supply commitment to WMO-GAW and EMEP). Monitoring network operation, data processing and preparing the monthly issued Atmospheric Environmental Review.
  • Long time monitoring of carbon dioxide budget between the atmosphere and surface. Carbon-budget researches in co-operation with the Department of Meteorology of the Eötvös Loránd University. Study of the dispersion of greenhouse gas content of the atmosphere in co-operation with the Laboratory for Climate and Environmental Research, France.
  • Estimation of the balance of greenhouse gases between the atmosphere and agricultural fields, investigation of the effects non-anthropogenic sources in Hungary. Determination of less atmosphere loading cultivation strategies.
  • Tropospheric ozone concentration researches. Measurements of the tropospheric ozone at background monitoring stations, observation of the threshold exceedences (EU directives) and the long term variation of concentration.
  • Trajectory calculations in the framework of a contract with the National Nuclear Energy Agency (FLEXTRA). Development of the operative trajectory calculating program system, visualization with the HAWK meteorological visualization system.
  • Modelling the long-range transport and dispersion of air pollutants (FLEXPART), comparison of dispersion models in the framework of the international ETEX project. Calculation and visualization of concentration and deposition fields, for the case of a hypothetic nuclear accident at Paks.
  • Enhancing of the Hungarian transmission standards, creation and fulfilling of a database for regulatory purposes. Modelling the dispersion of industrial pollution on local scale (AERMOD), preparation of effect studies for the Hungarian Environment Protection Inspectorates.
  • Environmental Assessment Programme (KÉP), a common research activity of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Ministry for Environment and Water. Investigation of human health and ecosystem relevant environmental pollutants on regional scale.
