SUMMER SCHOOL ON
"CLIMATE VARIABILITY & CLIMATE CHANGE:
ESTIMATING AND REDUCING UNCERTAINTIES"

Introduction: The main objective of the summer school is to bring together practitioners of IPCC-class climate models, the researchers from the theoretical climate dynamics, and dynamical- and complex-system experts to chart a path towards better understanding the sources of uncertainties in climate models, as well as estimating and reducing these uncertainties.

Dates: 8-17 June, 2009 (Monday morning to next Wednesday noon)

Location: Along the Danube River (Danube Bend) North from Budapest

Scientific Committee: M. Ghil (chair), K. Fraedrich, H. Le Treut, J.D. Neelin, T. N. Palmer

Local Organising Committee: A. Horányi (chair), G. Szépszó

Invited speakers:

  • J. H. Christensen, DMI, Copenhagen
  • H. Dijkstra, IMAU, Utrecht
  • K. Fraedrich, MIHU, Hamburg
  • M. Ghil, ENS, Paris, and UCLA
  • D. Jacob, MPI-M, Hamburg
  • H. Le Treut, LMD and IPSL, Paris
  • J. C. McWilliams, UCLA (to be confirmed)
  • J. D. Neelin, UCLA
  • T. N. Palmer, ECMWF
  • Z. Rácz, Eötvös Lóránd University, Budapest
  • D. Randall, Colorado State U., Fort Collins
  • E. Simonnet, INLN, Nice
  • L. A. Smith, LSE and Oxford
  • L. Sushama, University of Quebec at Montreal, Montreal
  • E. Tziperman, Harvard, Cambridge (Mass.)

Programme: Please see the tentative programme.

Participation: Around 40-50 students are anticipated from the discipline of theoretical climate dynamics and practical regional climate modelling. Scientists with Master degree, PhD students and post-doc researchers are equally welcome to attend the Summer School.

Financial support: Limited financial support is available. The need for support should be anticipated in the preliminary expression of interest and also in the formal application form afterwards.

Anticipated schedule:

  • Deadline of formal application: 31 December 2008.
  • Acceptance of applications (also for financial support): 28 February, 2009
